As much as I’ve been coming to peace with A) having neighbors B) having “those kinds” of neighbors, I’ve learned enough recently to warrant some extra eyes on my land.
Sad but true. I’ve oft considered getting some version of a trail camera, basically redneck security camera, but simply haven’t, essentially out of a lack of need. About 20 years ago my cabin was broken into, I was robbed. Separate story, not forgotten, not the topic here. The ripples had softened though, until a recent discussion with a neighbor.
Here’s an interesting and related aside. I have two neighbors up the road toward the pavement. One is ex-military, Purple Heart special forces, the other a Maine state deputy sheriff. We don’t have a ton in common, but plenty of mutual respect, we’re neighborly…
Down the road I have four neighbors, three of them felons. These are recent additions to the neighborhood, obviously shifting the vibe. Here I am in the middle, the good guys up that way, the bad guys down that way. Am I neutral? I guess I have been, tried to be, until now.
Having a trail camera doesn’t put me in either camp, but it means I don’t have trust, respect, and it really sucks. As I mentioned, it’s been on the radar for years, and unfortunately now a reality. It’s insurance, it collects and stores data, peace of mind? Sorta, kinda…
The good news is they cost a lot less than I feared, thought, and now packed with assorted features and options. With today’s technology, I’ll be able to receive data from the camera anywhere, anytime. I guess that’s the peace of mind. (What good is a camera if someone steals it, disables it?! With real-time connectivity, those things could happen, but the incriminating evidence isn’t lost. It’s a cold hard world sometimes…)
