One of my favorite sights is this sculpture, I guess you could call it. It’s in a quiet neighborhood in Brunswick between route one and the coast. I adore it…(despite it being a stump of course)
On the stump note, it is slowly occurring to me the impact BrownTail moth/caterpillar are having. I was seeing lots of enoutmous stumps this winter. I spoke with an arborist (while delivering to his home) and he explained the culprit was likely BrownTail.
I’ve since noticed their impact, mostly on oaks, taking out parts of trees, areas where every oak is dead. Dee ring Oaks in Portland did a study and quickly realized if they didn’t spray, it would soon just be Deering Park. How devastating to a city greenspace would it be to loose hundreds of years of shade in a few years…. (sorry, not putting a question mark there, it’s not really a question…)
If you have oaks, educate yourself, protect them. Both are easy, neither is popular. Next up the Ash. A boring pest is on the move, it won’t be long until they’ve crossed the threshold of not being able to manage, control!
