This 2000* fireplace mortar, conveniently supplied in a caulk tube, was inexpensive and worth a try. I left the house this morning without lighting a fire so the cooktop was cool when I returned around four.

It’s not meant for exactly what I’m attempting. It’s supposed to have 24 dry time (didn’t note that during purchase), hmmm, that ain’t happening. I pulled all the removable top parts, lined each spot with a bead as I put them back. Slow low fire and see what happens.

This much is try already, I smell zero fumes/gasses from the fire. A good start, I’ll see what this forced cure does…
