I made a big dent would be a vast understatement! I’m well over half way, perhaps even three quarters of the way through the process. Showers are due so I’m covering things up. It’s less about keeping the wood dry as it is more about keeping moisture out of the pile.
Sure, that might not make any sense….
The most important thing about storing wood is to get it off the ground, any surface really. The next might be ventilation, air flow. Covering or enveloping wood is a recipe for mushroom growth, the exact opposite of what wood needs to dry, not rot.
So, the freshly split wood is in fact on the ground, temporarily. What I don’t want is water getting down into the pile, where it won’t escape, instead it soaks into the wood, which now has vastly increased surface area
Keeping rain off it will facilitate the drying process. I think I’m going to stack a bunch in the shome for drying, a sun powered kiln of sorts. I’ll stack it on pallets, lobster traps, anything that will keep it off the ground, will allow air flow, and diminish the potential for it to wick moisture from the ground.
I’m pleased with the progress, it reinforces why I love exercise, activity, work, and being in shape. Hydration and stretching might stave off soreness, but I didn’t go at it epically either. Slow and steady, solid push. I’ll feel it in my arms and back, but not to the degree of being incapacitated, sorry I did it.
Better, I’m not finished! I am, however, ready for a beer and some dinner. It’s lovely being back upta camp!!
(My landlord checked in yesterday and the conversation was good, but stirred the winter employment anxiety pot!! I’ve some ideas and will keep you posted…)
