A honker of a salamander across the road the other day. It was moving slowly in the cold.
Of course I didn’t touch it my bare hands. The oil from human’s hands is the exact opposite of what a water soluble semipermeable membrane needs. It’s been said that “it burns them” but how do we know? Does it hurt? How do we know?
It’s fair to say it’s likely (highly) detrimental to them. Nuff said. The leaves I used to move it to the ditch served as temporary camouflage, hopefully not a winter home.
“Helping” in nature doesn’t always work out as we are so far removed from its rhythms and rules. I know I didn’t run it over, and since I moved it in the direction it was moving, may have made it so it didn’t get run over.
It was a beautiful creature, that much I know
