I went deeper still, all the way in. I found more soot than I wanted to, but not unsurprisingly, in the water heater section of the original build. Need a 6” stove pipe brush to get it cleaned out. The heat transfer to the floor heating system will be better, so though it’s an added step and expense, I don’t begrudge it!
Initially I just wanted to connect the new stove to the old bench, flu system. It wasn’t that simple despite it working well enough (barely) for a couple winters.
Time to dial it in as the top gets an upgrade. The cast iron stove top was a lovely idea, but it didn’t seal well enough and wasn’t smooth (so the fire was cooling and tumbling, the perfect recipe for inefficient exhaust, poor draft and soot build up).
Yesterday was delightfully asphalt free, I work today at four so reluctant to make a separate trip to collect materials. I forfeited my first day off in the dish corner, so hardly feel bad about languishing a bit on the land.
Cool clear nights herald the shifting season, slipping below 50* tonight for the first time in months…
