I’m humbled

And even a little embarrassed. I am a nascent mechanic, and learned something powerful yesterday.

Returning from the laundry run, I was reminded of something I said to Deedles “I don’t know if this (clutch replacement) is the fix, but it makes sense so it’s getting done, it’s a process.” MINCX made “THE NOISE” as I was nearing home at the intersection of 192 and 9.

My heart sank, I worried about the engine, bike, and scurried home for more online research. Chain issues could be the issue, is it internal on the other side I had open?

I leaned into some chain maintenance, there are a couple sticky links. I discovered that the front sprocket cover had a loose bolt, one of three. The bolt in question held the lower portion of a chain guard.

I removed the cover and discovered that the guard had some wear, metal on metal. The chain was hitting the guard at certain times!

I smoothed the wear with a file, lubed the chain, and refastened the cover, replete with blue loc-tite. It’s a glue of sorts, blue helps hold things in place, the red is almost like a vice grip.

Went back and forth from work, no noise!!! Fresh clutch, lots of lessons. As Deedles pointed out, “You learned a lot about MINCX.”

Yup, and that the process of elimination in trouble shooting is more important than I gave it attention. Still a win, and serious bunch of lessons, but all’s well that ends well….
